Local Geography “Place
Paper”
- You will need to pick a local place. This can be very specific, such as “My Families Land” or a little more general, such as “Salmon Creek Community” Geographical features can also be chosen, such as “The Eel River” or “Gillem Butte.” Keep in mind that broader topics, such as “The Eel River” will have far more information on them than extremely localized and remote locations.
- Your report should follow the following rough outline. Deviation from this outline is fine, as is mixing up components, but in general this is what I am looking for in each report.
1.
Introduction
2.
Body
a. What is
the place you are talking about? Why is it important? What is its modern
context?
b. Why do we
care? What is the history of this place?
c. Physical
Geography influences. Weather, climate, etc.
d. Cultural Geography. Who has
lived here thru the ages? How have they interacted with the place?
3.
Pictures. You will need a minimum of three illustrations in
your paper. These can be maps, diagrams, photographs, hand drawn sketches, and
charts, as well as any other visual. The criteria are that you need three, but
each one must be from different genera. I do not want three of the same thing.
4.
First Person Interview. You need to find a person that has
been in the area that your report deals with for more than 20 years, and
interview them about your topic. I will need to see the dated interview, and
how you incorporated it in to your report. If you have trouble finding someone,
come see me.
5.
Conclusion.
6.
Bibliography. This will follow the same format as the previous
report. APA formatting guidelines can be found here http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/05/.
I will provide examples of proper citations upon request. Here is an example:
Book: Jans, N. (1993). The last light breaking: Life
among Alaska's Inupiat Eskimos. Anchorage, AK: Alaska Northwest Books.
Website: The Sea Turtle
Restoration Project homepage presents a wealth of compelling, well-researched
information on the struggle to save the world's sea turtles from extinction (http://www.seaturtles.org).
A complete list and examples of
how you should cite different materials can be found here: http://www.umuc.edu/library/guides/apa.shtml
Although is would be nice if it were,
this is not an exhaustive guide to your report. There should be questions about
how you should write your report. Please come ask me them. Thank you, and have
fun.

2) Remember that yesterday the Costume Research was due. I should have a document on Drive that
- has a picture
- has an url for more information
- has a paragraph or two copied and pasted from that url
---------------
Due Monday 9/17:

Outline is similar to what is being required by Ben.
Here is an example:
I. Introduction
- Hook
- Thesis
III. Pants
IV. Tunics
V. Weapons
- Swords
- Bows
- Knives
VI. Jewelry
- Rings
- Necklaces
- Bracelets
- Face Paint
- Body Paint
- Buy Weapons
- Make Headress
- Use Dad's sandles
- Pay Aunt Jane to sew tunic
For each major heading (ie Makeup) except Introduction and Conclusion, I will need at least a paragraph copied and pasted from a website (copy url, too) or photocopied from a book (with title and page number) that gives information on the heading. The above is due Monday. For planning purposes, the complete assignment is below.
Book Reports
Book Reports.
This you will be responsible
for one book report a month. These reports need to be on books that are
approved by me. You need to have the book approved by me before you start
reading it and/ or doing a report. You need to pick books you have not read
before the start of this school year to do book reports on.
These reports are due on the
first day of school, each month. If this is a huge problem, talk to me. It is
better to talk to me before hand, and come up with a plan together, than show
up that first day of the month without a book report.
Your book report should
follow the following criteria. You will need a sheet of paper, 15x11 inches,
which you can get from me. On that piece of paper you will need to create your
report. There is no prescription for exactly how it should look but it needs to
include the following elements.
·
Picture(s)/
Illustration(s) related to the book. This is the most important element. This
should be a work of art. You need to put real effort and skill in to the
creation of your illustration.
·
Author, date published
·
Brief plot description
·
Brief character
description, along with roles. (Are these characters protagonists, antagonists,
support, etc.)
·
Any message the book is
trying to send. Is the book trying to convince you of something? Is there an
argument that is present throughout the writing?
·
Your name, and the date
you finished the book.
·
Did you enjoy the book;
would you recommend it? WHY or WHYNOT?
·
All writing on your
report paper needs to be in CURSIVE.
Some ideas for creating your
report. These are just suggestions, but I do not want all your reports to look
the same. Have fun creating different formats that embody the above criteria.
If you do not meet all of the criteria I will hand your report back to you and have
you do it again. Also, if your book report has any mistakes in spelling, grammar, punctuation, I will
hand it back to you and have you do it again.
·
Book Jacket. You can
design an alternate book jacket for the book.
·
Poster. Make a catchy
design that would be an advertisement for the book.
·
Make a storyboard for a
TV feature of the book.
·
Make a comic strip of
the book.
·
Just do a plain old
report.
Remember that all of these
ideas, and any you have on your own, need to include the criteria in the first
list. How you do that is up to you. Try and have fun. Use paints, markers,
pencils, dirt, berries and fur from your cat. Make these interesting. As
always, if you are unsure of something, or have questions, please let me know.
